The current structure of Serie A dates back to the 1929–30 season. The competition was divided into regional groups from 1898 to 1922. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) divided the CCI (Italian Football Confederation) in 1921, resulting in the formation of the Lega Nord (Northern Football League), which is the ancestor of today’s Lega Serie A, in Milan. The FIGC developed two interregional divisions when CCI teams rejoined, rebranding Categories to Divisions and separating FIGC sections into two north–south leagues. Due to internal problems and fascist influences, the FIGC revised internal settings in 1926, adding southern teams to the national division, resulting in the final settlement of 1929–30. Following an aircraft tragedy near the end of the season in which the entire team was killed, Torino was crowned winners in 1948–49. [requires citation]

Because the victorious side has worn a miniature coat of arms with the Italian tricolor on their strip in the following season since the 1923–24 season, the Serie A Championship title is often referred to as the scudetto (“little shield”). Juventus is the most successful club, having won 36 titles, followed by Milan and Internazionale, each with 18 titles. After the final turn of the championship in the 2004–05 season, a real trophy was presented to the winning team on the field. The Coppa Campioni d’Italia trophy has been in use since the 1960–61 season, however it was sent to the winning teams at the Lega Nazionale Professionisti’s main office between 1961 and 2004.

In April 2009, Serie A and Serie B confirmed their separation. In a dispute over broadcast rights, nineteen of the twenty clubs voted in favor of the move; relegation-threatened Lecce voted against it. The new league’s president is Maurizio Beretta, the former president of Italy’s employers’ group.

The International Football Association Board selected Serie A to test video replays, which were initially private for the 2016–17 season, allowing them to become a live pilot phase, with replay aid adopted in the 2017–18 season, in April 2016. “We were among the early supporters of deploying the technology on the pitch,” FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio said of the decision. “We feel we have everything required to contribute our contribution to this vital experiment.”
