We provide reliable intelligence that empowers individuals and machines to make smart decisions by providing unequaled coverage in over 16 languages and reaching billions of people every day. Reuters, which was founded in 1851, has stayed committed to the Trust Principles of independence, honesty, and neutrality, working tirelessly to bring news from the source and from all corners of the globe.

At the start of the Revolutions in 1848, Paul Reuter worked at a book printing firm in Berlin and was involved in the distribution of radical pamphlets. These publications drew a lot of attention to Reuter, who built a prototype news service in Aachen in 1850, employing homing pigeons and electric telegraphy from 1851 on to send messages between Brussels and Aachen, at what is now known as Reuters House.

In 1851, Reuter relocated to London and opened a news wire agency at the London Royal Exchange. Reuter’s company, based in London, initially focused on commercial news, serving banks, brokerage houses, and other businesses. The London Morning Advertiser was the first newspaper client to subscribe in 1858, and others followed shortly after. “The value of Reuters to newspapers resided not merely in the financial news it gave, but in its capacity to be the first to report on topics of international importance,” according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. For example, it was the first to report Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in Europe in 1865.

Reuter incorporated his own firm in 1865, naming it Reuter’s Telegram Company Limited, and appointing Reuter as managing director.

Reuter’s began expanding into the Far East in 1872, followed by South America in 1874. Advances in overland telegraphs and submarine cables made both expansions possible. Reuter stepped down as managing director in 1878, and his eldest son, Herbert de Reuter, took over. Reuter’s began sending information to London newspapers through electricity in 1883.
