Under Qatari law, Al Jazeera Media Network is a private foundation for public benefit. Al Jazeera Media Network receives funding from the Qatari government through this structure, but maintains editorial independence. Critics have accused Al Jazeera of supporting the Qatari government’s positions, despite the fact that Al Jazeera platforms and channels have published content critical of Qatar or in violation of Qatari laws and norms.

The network is sometimes accused of having primarily Islamist perspectives, promoting the Muslim Brotherhood, and reporting regional issues with a pro-Sunni and anti-Shia bias. Al Jazeera, on the other hand, claims to cover all sides of a debate; for example, the network claims to present Israel’s and Iran’s viewpoints with equal objectivity. Osama bin Laden’s videos have been broadcast on Al Jazeera. The closure of the news station was one of thirteen demands made to Qatar during the 2017 Qatar crisis by the Saudi, Emirati, Bahraini, and Egyptian governments in June 2017.

Other media outlets have expressed their support for the network. Al Jazeera, according to The Atlantic magazine, has a far more moderate, Westernized face than Islamic jihadism or rigid Sunni orthodoxy, and despite being dubbed “an ‘Islamist’ stalking horse,” the network actually broadcasts “very little specifically religious content.”
